Every place we have lived has its own unique Christmas traditions and displays. We love to try and support the community and check out these local traditions. In Abilene, they have two big events. The first is the Parade of Lights downtown. There were about 100 parade entries, all lit up. It was a lot of fun to meet our friends the Bradshaw's there and watch the parade. If I am still Primary President next year, I am thinking I may have to try to get our Church in the parade. What a great way to be a part of the community. I love watching Caleb get so excited to see the different floats! He just kept waving at everyone and wishing them a Merry Christmas.
After the parade, the city lights its Christmas tree. We got to watch some great performances by the joint High School's Madrigals and Orchestra. The Orchestra was particularly amazing and the tree was beautiful.
The other Abilene event takes place at the State School. We still have quite figured out what that is here but we know it has something to do with assisting the handicap and it has a large lights display every year. Businesses and Churches around the area create lighted displays that you drive through. They do have a small indoor area that has some cute displays and Santa is there.
It is fun to drive around and see all the lights.
Last year Caleb figured out that the Santa's you visit in stores are not the real Santa, so he hasn't really cared if he talks to Santa. He wants to send him a letter and doesn't care if he sits on Santa's lap. But we were really excited when we found these phone booths at the State School. These booths connect you directly to the North Pole so you can tell Santa what you would like for Christmas. Caleb was thrilled, to say the least! He called and talked to Mrs. Claus and was so excited that he could tell the North Pole he wants a Puppy! (Which he will not be getting!) These booths actually connect you to real people who talk to the children, and it is a wonderful idea
The cool train display and Christmas dolls display featured inside.
As we were leaving, Caleb was so excited about talking to the North Pole that he insisted Mom try it out. He pretty much pushed me in there and handed me the phone. I ended up talking to an Elf in Santa's Workshop. The phone booths have been a highlight for Caleb this year!
We hope you have had as much fun as we have getting ready for Santa to come visit our house!
